The city is shutting down a 4.5-mile street route for four hours to hold free yoga, a hula hoop contest, break dancing and other activities in an effort to lure residents out of their cars and into a healthier lifestyle.
The city's first "Sunday Streets" event kicks off Sunday with street closures from Bayview to Chinatown from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It is just the latest health-improvement initiative launched by the city that has recently passed legislation banning cigarette sales in pharmacies, limitations on places people can smoke and rewards for restaurants who forgo trans fats.
But merchants at Fisherman's Wharf are fearful the road closures will not be healthy for business, and will pay close attention to the event's effect on revenues.
Another Sunday Streets is scheduled for Sept. 14.
