OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A judge has ordered the leader of the now-defunct Your Black Muslim Bakery and three co-defendants to stand trial on kidnapping and torture charges.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Eric Labowitz said Friday that bakery head Yusuf Bey IV, his half brother Yusuf Bey V, Richard Lewis and Tamon Halfin will stand trial on seven felony counts each for the kidnapping and torture of two women in 2007.
Bey IV was arrested on the kidnapping and torture charges a day
after Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey was shot dead on Aug. 2,
2007. Bailey had been working on an investigative story about the
troubled bakery.
Another bakery associate, Devaughndre Broussard was charged with
Bailey's murder after confessing, then recanting. Broussard's lawyer says Broussard was pressured into a confession by Bey IV. Bey IV has denied any involvement in Bailey's murder.
Bey IV faces a life sentence if convicted of the kidnapping and
torture charges. The four men are due back in court on Aug. 22.
