ORANGE, Calif. (AP) - A Continental Airlines jet made an emergency landing at Orange County's John Wayne Airport just after its departure when a pilot smelled smoke, authorities said.

The plane with 113 passengers and five crew aboard landed safely
Thursday afternoon and evacuated without incident, airport
spokeswoman Rachel Gibson said.

The flight bound for Newark, N.J. left at 4:18 p.m., and landed back at the airport 20 minutes later.

Federal Aviation Administration Spokesman Ian Gregor said there was "no report of an actual fire on board," and fire crews at the scene found no flames or smoke on the plane.

"We'll work with the airline to determine the cause," Gregor said. "Any number of things can cause the smell of smoke."

Gregor said past incidents were spurred by burnt coffee or blown
engine seals. He said pilots are trained to use an abundance of caution if even the smell of smoke is detected.

In a similar situation Tuesday passengers evacuated with inflatable chutes when someone smelled smoke in the cabin of a Honolulu-bound plane that made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.
