INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - An officer-involved shootout in a Pic 'N' Save parking lot has left one person dead and another injured in Inglewood.

Police Sergeant Jeff Steinhoff says officers on patrol allegedly heard gunshots and saw a man running through a strip mall parking lot around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Steinhoff says that when officers drove into the parking lot to find the shooter, they encountered a vehicle coming head on.

After additional gunshots rang out, officers returned fire fearing they were being fired upon.

Steinhoff says the police officers were not hurt.

The car's driver was hospitalized, his condition is unknown. One
passenger died and another is in custody.

The matter is under investigation.
