School years could be up to 10 days shorter to avoid layoffs during a financial emergency if a new bill passes.

Members of the Assembly Education Committee on Monday considered AB117, which allows districts to apply for a waiver to reduce a school year to 170 days, below the 180-day minimum in Nevada statute.

Clark County School District proposed an amendment that would automatically reduce staff paychecks if the waiver was approved, regardless of existing collective bargaining agreements.

The Nevada State Education Association and other opponents said the amendment was an attack on collective bargaining and an attempt to bypass unions, which had been making salary concessions throughout the recession.

They said shortening the year would also shortchange students of critical classroom time.

No action was taken on the bill.

WCSD could save $1,000,000 per year if they dropped Wooster's IB programme (page 7 of 11), http://www.truthaboutib.com/images/Wooster.pdf The District also loaned money to Incline residents and spent over $109,000 in an attempt to FORCE IB on all students in Incline. http://myinclinevillage.com/2011/03/21/incline-residents-owe-wcsd-65000---70000.aspx WHO WILL HOLD WCSD ACCOUNTABLE, for wasting monay and loaning money to residents?

I think that cutting 10 days from the school year is a good alternative to other educational cuts. Looking back to when I was in high school, which was about 5 years ago, there were many days which were not fully utilized for education but rather for 'babysitting', for lack of a better word. It would be very possible to fit the same education into a 170 day school year if only the time in class was better utilized for education and not entertainment.
