I love this freaking place!
On Friday, June 12th at 5:00am, KOLO-TV completed the transition to digital television. Viewers who receive KOLO-TV with an antenna over the air will likely need to rescan their converter boxes or Digital TV’s at that time. Even if my tv career in Reno was over tomorrow, I think I would rather look for a new job here than look for another tv gig elsewhere.  I think that is saying a lot considering I only have lived here 5 months, and I really like being a weatherman.  The biggest reason it would be hard to leave is that it is so beautiful and there are so many cool things to do.  I hope I get to stay for a long time.

This is a little taste of what I have been up to.

The first big snow near the Thomas Creek Trail

My girlfriend (Stacey) and I at Tahoe.

A great hike in Hidden Valley Park.

Stacey thinking about the meaning of life....or wondering how the heck we will get down the mountain.

You can still fall into a drift wearing snowshoes.  Either that or my sister is 4 feet taller than my girlfriend.

Everyone in Reno also seems ardently enthusiastic or obsessed about something like hot air balloons, classic cars, ribs, gambling, rodeos, Burning Man, wife beater shirts, meth, living in trailers. In fact, one might consider calling this the Biggest Little Freaking City in the World. You can’t really say Salt Lake City, Denver, or Cedar Rapids are freaking cities. You can’t say, “Dude, San Jose is freaking me out!” You can say, like dude, I just spent the night hanging out with this bowler from Michigan who wanted to snort coke off a prostitute at a brothel, then we played poker at a casino all night, then the next morning we went rafting and fishing on the river, then we spent the rest of the day at a bar hanging out with a biker, tattoo artist, painter, poet, transvestite, and lawyer on his lunch break who then gave her a ride back to her hotel on his Harley. I was all like, “This is one heck of a freaking city!”

According to Merriam-Webster, freak is an odd or seemingly pointless idea or capricious event, as in a freak storm. It is also a person having a physical oddity and appearing in a circus sideshow. In slang, it is a sexual deviate or drug user. It can also be an ardent enthusiast or someone obsessed with something as in a car freak or control freak. According to all these definitions, Reno qualifies as a freaking city. There really is no point to Reno. While Pittsburgh is a steel town and Portland provides sanctuary for emo’s, what does Reno really do besides make your skin dry? If Reno was a person, it would appear in a circus sideshow as the biggest little city in the world. I’d pay to see that. With legalized prostitution, a swinger’s bar on E 4th Street, and plenty of shoe stores, it is full of sexual deviates. Most all people in Reno are on drugs. How else do you explain all the California chain stores and restaurants?

Hey Pat, did your girlfriend dump you?

Posted by: Lola Location: California Border town
Yah... Pat, why do you bother writing when you are conflicted. GO back to the park and sit in a snow drift. It's ok. We'll be fine without you. It's ohhhKaaay.

Posted by: anon Location: reno
pat, go back to california if you like it so much and hate nevada so much!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Reno
Why are all you people getting so worked up about the word FREAKING!?!?! And why are you putting everything in quotations!?!? Why don't you first GO BACK TO 2ND GRADE, then realize that there are far worse words than FREAKING! FREAKING FREAKING FREAKING FREAKING FREAKING!

Posted by: Sarah Location: Reno, NV
PAT...if you hate reno so much, then leave. We'll be fine without you.

Posted by: PAT Location: reno
I would rather be at Yosemite. Between tahoe & Yosemite. The casino & home. Both have "TRAFFIC." YOSEMITE DOSEN'T HAVE casinos, which I don't support. I've gone to Yosemite all my life. If I was going to spend on vacation it won't be nv. I don't beauty in nv. California beat nv by a long way. I love OAK TREES & WILD FLOWERS AT YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK. sage brush is weed!

Congrats on winning the poker tournament.

Right Natalie of Lovelock! Real ID is another expense illegals have created for Nevada.

Posted by: Rosie Location: Reno
Dennis, you are not in SoCal. NV is Cowboy Country. Love where you live, but when in Rome, do as the Romans. In this case, do not Californiaize NV. Do so and State Income Tax next. Welcome BTW. 'Freaking'? How high school is that? LMBO

Posted by: PAT Location: hillbillyhellholereno,nv
I HATE LIVING IN reno,nv. LIVING IN NV. ALL I HEARD FROM nevadannns, seven years ago. How I hate CALIFORNIA. Well that's I feel about nv, 30 years ago. And still after seven years, living with hillbillys.

Hi Dennis, My Hubby & I watch you most every morning. I grew up in this area and moved back after 30 years. I can't believe I ever left. My Hubby has never lived in the mountains before and every day he says how gorgeous it is here. He never tires of the views. We love this freaking place too!

Posted by: Sheri Location: Sparks
Hey Dennis! Glad you love this place! I'm born and raised right here in the Reno-Sparks area and I can't imagine living anywhere else. By the way, FYI, you can always tell who the long time locals are, we're are the friendliest and will talk to a post! At least that's what my husband says about me!

Posted by: Fiber Location: I'm here
Now you guys make me wanna purchase a KOLO hat, or souvenir. I love this FREAKING STATION!!!

Posted by: Auburn Location: KOLO
Hi, this is KOLO Reporter Auburn....I freaking love it here too! It's a freaking great place to live and practice freedom of speech! Yay for Reno!

Posted by: Kim Location: Reno
Dennis, "Freakin" is a perfectly fine word to use. You're loved @ KOLO and you're loved and accepted by Reno. I'm happy that you love your new home town!! It's great to see someone so enthusiastic about where they live, instead of sitting around blogging to put down someone's excitement! Happy Trails to you Dennis!!! Blog ON!!

I'm not a snow lover either, but I can appreciate the beauty of this place in winter (such as in your photos). On the down side of this snowy weather in out Biggest Little City, I hate the look of the piles of grey snow in the parking lots & the messy slush around town & all the dirty cars (especially mine), not to mention dealing with black ice in the a.m. & the the unplowed roads in a lot of residential neighborhoods. At least, it eventually melts off. Also, it can get freaking cold & lasts too freaking long. Half my life is spent bundled up. But your photos are fantastic--thanks for sharing them with us. Stacey is lovely. No offense taken whatsover with the word "freaking"---hey, it got attention, right? Look how many people have responded to this blog!

Posted by: Fiber Location: Reno
Dennis ~ most of us figured that out. You're a positive addition to the weather at KOLO and I hope you're there a long time. It is very beautiful around here - and with the snow (which I can't stand!!) it is even more so. All we have is "right now" so let's make the most of it. Have a fine day.

You didn't offend anyone Dennis. Sometimes people take things a little too seriously and try to take the happiness from others. You do an outstanding job and we love you here <: Keep enjoying the weather, the outdoors and our best kept secret.....

Posted by: Deja Vu Location: Carson City
I'm freakin' serious about loving it here, too. It's a freakin' cool place with some freakin' cool people. Well, there are some freaks, but they exist everywhere! Dennis - you rock!

Posted by: Stacy Location: Reno
Hey Dennis. I happen to appreciate the fact that you like it here and took the time to check out our surroundings. Jim is probably jealous and has no friends!!

Posted by: Nevada Gal Location: DC
I agree - I love this place. I have been away for 8 years and whenever I get to come home to Reno It tears out my heart everytime I leave. I am a 35 year resident of northern Nevada, I am glad you love this place too and welcome you. Our oddballs who think that "Freak ing" is an expletive just add to the charm. Hopefully you'll get more responses from folks who agree with you about how gorgeous this area is than comments about freak ing.

Posted by: Dennis Location: Reno
Wow!...This is Dennis by the way...I didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just trying to express how great I think it is here.

Posted by: Reina Location: Reno
And JIM NEVADEN'S DONT LIKE GRUMPY OLD MEN, SO DONT speak for all the people that live in Nevada. FREAKING IS NOT a cuss word, its a word of expression just like the word happy, so get over yourself old man. Once you have stopped having a since of humor its time to plan your burial so do us all a favor, shoot yourself in the head JIM!!! Your DOING a WONDERFULL job WEATHER MAN!!! I LIKE YOU!!!

Posted by: A lot of us Location: Walker, CA
You people need to lighten up with the word choice. If you think it's distasteful, perhaps it is YOUR own inner voice giving it a 'distasteful' meaning. WE LOVE YOU DENNIS.

Posted by: Jackie Location: Field Creek, SW
My husband and I just moved here from Houston a month ago and we have never lived in a cold climate before and we love it!! We just haven't made any friends yet but I am sure we will as people are so friendly here. We are originally from South Africa and hoping to make some great friends here in Reno soon.

Posted by: Prince Albert Location: Nearby
Dan..don't give him "FLACK" for saying "freaking." ha ha Ok, Dennis, we think you should stick around for a long time. Just keep getting our weather right. Oh, and make friends with Mother Nature - it might help.

Posted by: weather watcher Location: reno
Hey Red Storm ---as they say, Reno is our little secret (shhh---don't tell anyone it's one of the best places to live). If I happen to be up at 5am, I can catch you on air---I hope you get to stay for a long time too. If you took these photos yourself, you could be an excellent photographer. But I hope you will be our weatherman for a long time. I like your personality!

Posted by: Anonymous Please take this "OFF" It's Very diss tastefull. " FREAKING "

Posted by: Jim Location: Reno
Us Nevaden's don't like your comment by saying "FREAKING" Go back where you came from. And you can say that "WORD" anytime you wish. That was "VERY RUDE" of you. Beside's that. Your not very liked. Your lucky if you still have a job!!!!!!

Posted by: Reina Location: Reno
Hey weather man dont worrie about Dan, he doesnt know S#IT about the new age talk. My favorite picture is of your girlfriend stuck in the snow. I couldnt help but laugh out loud hehehe. How did you get her out without getting yourself in the situation? Thanks for the reminder of just how beautiful it is here.

Posted by: Valerie Location: Virginia City Highlands
I totally agree. I love the fact that wild horses come through my yard, there is wide open spaces everywhere. Then when company comes to town there is Reno or Tahoe. So many things to choose from during the year. I moved here from the Rogue Valley, Southern Oregon in 1999 and the longer I stay the less I think of going back.

Posted by: Natasha Location: Sierraville
You should come and see the largest alpine valley in the US and stop in the Sierra Hot Springs and get an awesome theraputic massage and then soak in the natural hot springs. Just one of the many magical places in this area.

Did you have to say freaking?
