We need a playoff system in college football. Everyone knows it.....even President-elect Barack Obama. Every other major college sport has one, including 1-AA, DII and DIII football. So why not DI? (I know that DI is now the FBS and 1-AA is now the FCS, but that's just plain confusing!) What we have now is two teams that may not get any chance at one of the "major" BCS bowls. Cincinnati is going to the BCS for the first time, getting the AUTOMATIC berth for winning the Big East. They won their final regular-season game, finishing 10-2 overall. But they clinched the conference title before the win, meaning they still would have gone to the BCS with a loss. Their record could have been 9-3!!!! Then you have the Beavers. If Oregon State beats Oregon, they go to the BCS due to an AUTOMATIC berth for winning the Pac-10 title. Oregon State will be 9-3 with the win. How can the BCS take a THREE loss team over undefeated ones? There is some lame rule about "mid-majors." Only one automatic berth goes to a qualified "mid-major." When you have more than one, then it's up to the Bowl committees to chose them as an at-large berth. That rarely happens. Utah, Boise State and Ball State are all undefeated. Utah is ranked 6th in the BCS standings....they are in. Boise is 9th overall.....and they are likely out (but anything is possible.) Ball State is 11-0 and ranked 15th. They have no shot whatsoever! I know that a playoff system is not coming any time soon. But they must do away with Automatic berths. The BCS Bowl spots should go to the teams with the best regular-season records. That's why you play the season. Most times the teams that win the big conferences are so good that they would be in the BCS anyway. Give the little guys a chance.....you never know what can happen. Just ask Oklahoma fans who are still in shock thanks to Boise State. Which by the way was the GREATEST game I have ever seen. |
