Professional Sports More Dream Than Reality

Former Wolf Pack star Jorge Cordova was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.  Jorge was one of the most dominant defensive players I had ever seen.  He still holds the school record with 29.5 career sacks, but he just can't find a spot in the NFL.

It's certainly not all his fault.  Jorge was a 3rd round pick back in 2004, but he spent the first two seasons of his career on the Injured Reserve.  That definitely stunted his growth as a player, and the Jags wound up moving on with other players.

It goes to show you that sometimes even the best college players can not make it at the next level.  Just look at Alex Van Dyke.  Picked with the first selection in the second round (highest ever for a Wolf Pack player,) Alex was a bust in the NFL.  That's why an education is so important.  It's also an example that every high school kid should understand.  There's no problem with chasing your dream, but you have to have a back-up plan.  Not many people ever even make it to the pros....and it's even harder to stay there.

I hope Jorge gets another chance somewhere.  He's a great guy and, I still believe, he has the talent to make a roster in the NFL.  But if he doesn't, he's still made enough money to open other avenues and opportunities in his life.  Someone like Nichiren Flowers never even got that chance.  Hopefully Nich used his college experience for something other than JUST football.
