I think it's good for both the team and the player..especially in football. Take Colin Kapernick for example. He redshirts his first year at college..meaning he can practice with the team but he can't play. Perfect scenario for a quarterback. He gets a year to learn the system as well as bulk about to help him compete at the Division-one level. He now has 4 years to go, but has an edge because he spent a whole year learning the offense. By the time his senior season comes around...he'll be entering his 5th year in the system...good benefit for both the player and the team.
