Remarkable People

I've been lucky enough to cover some big stories over the years beginning with what I believe was the first breaking news live coverage in Reno TV history, the D.B. Cooper highjacking. I've been to Iraq. I was in New Orleans shortly after Katrina hit. Lots of breaking news, fires, floods, etc. But my favorite stories often involve remarkable people I meet. They usually aren't your everyday newsmakers. Kathy Levine, who's quietly worked for years gathering other people's cast off clothing for the disadvantaged comes to mind. So does Evelyn Mount.

I can add another name to that memory bank. Chris Neal is a 19 year old Fallon teenager, as typical a young man as you could find, but for his disability. You'll find his story posted on our website, but in a nutshell, Chris was born with a rare physical condition that's left his limbs twisted and weak. Doctors said he'd never walk. He proved them wrong. Three years ago, they said he'd soon be in a wheel chair. Instead he's been in a race car and he's been winning. Chris just wrapped up his first season at Fallon's Rattlesnake Raceway winning the season championship in his class and Rookie of the Year honors and he's looking forward to ski season. His dad will spend some of the winter building another race car, which like this one will be outfitted with special hand controls.

When I discover people like Chris and his parents, theyre always grateful, but surprised I want to  tell their story. That's backwards. I owe them thanks for letting me tell the story,  Chris, Larry, Jana, thanks again. Your example makes the world a richer place
