I will try to keep this short...I have wanted to be a broadcaster since I was 14, I am currently 24. I am fortunate enough to get the opportunity very early in my career.
I have worked at KOLO for a little over a year and a half and just finished school at UNR. I had many battles with myself, I do I want to stay in this field or do I want to do something else. It basically came down to the fact that if I got out, then i would be wasting six years of schooling trying to become an on air broadcaster.
Not only was I losing my motivation for the career, in March of 2006 my mom was diagnosed with pancreas cancer and shortly after that my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My father was able to win that battle fairly fast, but I would encounter another issue with my dad later that was far worse.
In August of 2007, I received a phone call from my mom telling me that my dad had passed away; my dad didn't control his diabetes. I didn't have a strong relationship with my father so it did really hurt me because of that, only to know that my dad passing away would hail in comparison to the following months. In September of 2007 my grandmother passed away and then in October 2007 my world changed forever has my mom lost her battle with cancer after a year and a half. 2007 has become a year to forget, minus walking in the UNR graduation.
The 2008 year has been a positive one so far. In January, I became a full-time employee at KOLO, it is my first full-time job. The best news of all just came within the last few weeks when I was given the chance to be a general news reporter. So after six years of school and some tough life things to go through my opportunity came. I hope I can make the best of this chance. I will leave you with this dreams do come true...

Congrats and it's awesome you fight to get what you want in life. :) Posted by: Dave Location: Carson City Congrats Dale. Keep in mind that the standard tv news business is changing by the hour. The future will offer you the opportunity to work for more community based news reporting than any "regional" tv outlet will offer. You will make more money than you'll ever earn at a "regional outlet", you won't have to move up the market-ladder and have to constantly move around the country. You can stay in one beautiful location (Reno) and raise a family without having to go climb the ladder somewhere else. In short, learn the craft, but apply it in a way that benefits you and the community far more than standard tv news. Good luck. Think independent, or news co-op. There's more money, more stablility and you'll have a lot more to offer the community if you don't have to move every two eyars. Posted by: Mike Location: Reno Man don't give up...you are almost over the hump! Good luck! Posted by: Becky Location: Reno Congratulations on the job. Life sometimes hands you some of the toughest situations, but it sounds like you are stronger now then before. Yes, it's always hard to loose a loved one. But "look at you now"! Your parents and Grandmother are very proud of what you have accomplished. Keep up the good work.!!!! Posted by: Angie Location: Cold Springs Best Wishes on a great Journey of your Dream. Angels are watching over you so keep the positive thoughts going. You will be just fine. <:) Posted by: Renee Location: Reno Congratulations Dale Clifford! (or should I say Dale Ray :) Your bravery and optimism has touched my entire family. We wish nothing but the best for you. We look forward to seeing you on channel 8, and we hope that in the future we see you on CNN or ESPN! Best of luck in 2008! Sincerely, The Miller Family |
