While the focus is finding 19-year-old Brianna Denison, Reno Police are still working another big case. The murder of UNR professor Judy Calder happened in August, but only now can legal proceedings begin.
Today, Judy's family received some really good news. The man accused of killing Calder, Mohamed Kamaludeen, also known as "Ricky Barge," was extradited into the U.S. from Mexico City, after a lengthy five-month process. Washoe County District Attorney's say five months is actually extraordinary, when it comes to extraditions. They expected it to take up to a year or even longer. But for the family, five months seemed like an eternity.
I feel closest to this story because I have been covering it since the day Judy went missing. I was with her husband, Jim, just minutes before some hunters found her body in a field in Elko County. It's my job to be somewhat hardened, to be able to separate emotions with the telling of a story...but in the case of Calder, it's been difficult.
I spoke with Jim Calder on the phone today, and asked him how he felt knowing that Rickey Barge would have to face murder charges, now that he's back in the U.S. His answer was truly heartbreaking.
He said: "When a family member is murdered, in a sense, the whole family is murdered. It's something we've experienced. I don't know if we will ever get back to what our family was."
It's hard to imagine what he must be going through, the kind of emotions he's battling...all the while knowing he could be spending several months in court, reliving the memory of his wife and what happened to her. I've interviewed a lot of people regarding Calder and who she was as a person. Everyone has always described her as a red-headed firecracker with this strong, larger than life personality. Yet when you see her picture, you see this very sad-looking face. She looks innocent, yet weathered like she has lived a full and interesting life. For her family though, not long enough.
Ricky Barge is supposed to appear in court on Monday for his arraignment. If he pleads not guilty, most likely a trial will be scheduled. I hope to bring the community the best coverage I can of this tragic story. For me, as a new reporter, this is the first murder case I've covered from beginning to end. No matter what happens, I truly hope her family is able to heal.
