Getting Back in Shape... OWWW!!!

I'm not a big person.  Anyone who's met me, knows I'm only 5' 1" and I don't weigh much more than a buck.  But trust me, I am NOT in shape.  Under my work clothes, I'm a pile of skinny flab.  I long for those long lost things I so fondly call, "muscle tone" and "strength."  So I've decided to finally get back in shape and do something about it!

The goal is simple.  I want to run an upcoming race, called the "Rock N River Half Marathon."  I used to be a fairly avid runner and regularly participated in community races.  It was an amazing way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, meet new people and stay healthy.  As I start to get back in shape, I know it's going to be a long and painful process.  In fact, after my first 2 runs, I can barely stand (or sit... or walk... or move)!

I'm hoping to get a little help from you.  I'll be keeping up my blog with progress reports and tips from experts, along with my trials and tribulations.  I'm hoping you will share your progress too.  Are you trying to lose some weight, build muscle, improve health?  Send me a message and we can work through it together!  If you're already a seasoned vet, do you have any tips?  Maybe a great running trail, your favorite gear, or dietary advice?

Welcome to the Reno Running Blog... I can't wait to hear what YOU have to say!!

Ann, I'm not much taller than you, and I too was an avid runner. Now, I teach yoga and practice on a daily basis. I still run every week, but only once a week(weather dependent) I just wanted to tell you that yoga really helps your endurance and your flexibility. If it weren't for all the yoga I do, I would never be able to still run for an hour or more. When I run now, as opposed to when I used to run, I have way more energy and way more endurance, I feel as if I could run forever. Yoga is way more difficult!

Congratulations to Anne, Kim and Pat at KOLO for finishing the 1/2 marathon today. You all worked hard to train and inspired and motivated many people in the area to join you and get in shape. Remember what I said..."finishing is WINNING!" You're all winners in my book!

I think you are inspiring many people to get out there and run. I myself feel the urge to run a couple of laps around the park just to keep up! I am rooting for you to have a great race. Can’t wait to see you at the finish line.

Hi Anne! Congrats on taking on the challenge and YES challenge of running a half marathon. I'm training to run my first 10k for "Moms On The Run" race. I know how hard it may be at times but the feeling of accomplishing something for yourself is awesome. Good Luck to you and I'll be cheering for you as well as my husband running his First half marathon. Thanks for the informative segments I'll be tuning in.

I read Kimberly's comments and I started to train to stand at the finish line and cheer you two as you complete the race. I just hope I have enough time to get my voice in shape. GO LADIES !!!!!!

Hi Annie! We have already talked... but for those of you who don't know me... I'm a Producer here at KOLO. I officially committed to do the half marathon yesterday... and as well, am getting my skinny flab back in shape! Tiny does not always mean in shape! I started training yesterday, and although I'm a little worried about the 1 month deadline, I know myself. So come join the girls at KOLO-8 and run with us! Or... I suppose... join our boyfriends on the sidelines and cheer us on! Good luck!

anne, yes, silver state striders has a website. just google them. women's running clubs are informal and are usually a group of running "friends" that you meet at/during fun runs. also, i think there is a local "team in training" group through the leukemia society and you can get on a list where they give you meeting times and places to train, then you go there and just strike up friendships with other women. most ldr's are friendly and like sharing their passion with other people. lastly, go see the folks at eclipse running on west moana lane. they are very informative. trail running is the best but best to go w/ a training partner. best of luck!

Hi Anne, I just quit smoking 1 1/2 months ago and have decided to get my a%% back in shape as well. I've been having a little problem with this place we have here caled "Cold Stone" and their Mud Pie Mojo's. I gained 5 pounds in 1 week! It was either smoke, or eat ice cream. At least I smell better. I have been going to Curves for some time now, but just got a trainer (today was my first day). I needed someone to PUSH me. So I'm going to Curves 5 days a week and to my trainer twice a week. I know that in the morning I will be in ALOT OF PAIN after today.

Hi Jim! The Rock n River half marathon is May 4th and it should be a blast! Lots of music, food, and a big party afterward. The marathon has also organized a number of practice runs, every Sunday at 10am. You can run as long as you'd like. For more information about the half marathon, or the free practice runs, you can check out their website: http://www.rock-n-riverhalfmarathon.com/home

Hi Sue... good luck with the run!! It sounds like you have a great start. I'm definitely no expert, but if there is something I do know, it's that "slow and steady wins the race." As for the running shoes, I don't really know. Every Tuesday at 6:50am, on Daybreak, we'll be talking about training for a run. There will be a different topic each week. Make sure to tune in, because I know we're planning on segment on running shoes! P.S. Tell your son congratulations. Maybe we'll be good enough to do a WHOLE marathon one day!

Anne, what a coincidence! My son-in-law ran the Napa Valley Marathon this past weekend. We are so proud and inspired! My daughter and I have made our simple goal the Mother's Day Run, a 5k jaunt. We've tried to make it around the track 4 time, either walking or jogging, minimum every other day. Owww it right! Right now our goal is to make a mile entirely running. P.S. Where is a good place to find GOOD running shoes that will help with shin splints?

Posted by: Anne Cutler Location: KOLO 8
It's Anne! Thanks for the advice, Bruce. Where can I get some more information about local running clubs? Do the Silver State Striders have a website, or do you know the names of some of the women's running clubs?

Posted by: bruce Location: reno
fyi-some advice, don't judge yourself right now based on what you used to run.i.e., don't beat yourself up. they say the longest run is the one we run against ourselves. secondly, try joining a group of people that are training or have a goal like yourself. or join a running club. the silver state striders have been around a long time and are a great bunch of people. that way you can get advice from people that are into running now and have the latest tips and places to run. you may feel more comfortable with a women only running club. either way, training by yourself will eventually get boring and you'll get flat before your race. lastly, get good shoes, i.e. spend more than you can afford-haha. it will make your runs fun and in turn you'll feel good. oh yeah, stretch more than you think you need to. remember, running is nothing more than putting one foot in front of the other! GOOD LUCK!

I started working out again after being lazy for a good 6 months. I'm trying to tone my body. I'm little too about 5'2". I try to walk around the marina once and I go home and what really works me out is "HIP HOP ABS" its a set of dvd's and it helps out a lot because it has up beat music and you learn to do some hip hop moves, its also great because you DO NOT have to do one sit up to get GREAT abs, its all standing up abs. It really makes me break out a good sweat. I would advise anyone who wants good looking abs to get HIP HOP ABS. Good luck with your work out. I have a goal to do it for a month straight and hopefully dont get lazy again!
