RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Reno judge says finding an impartial panel for James Biela's (BEE'-lahs) trial will be a challenge when jury selection begins Monday.
District Court Judge Robert Perry says that most people in the Washoe County jury pool have some awareness of the case. Biela is facing rape, kidnapping and murder in the death of 19-year-old Brianna Denison.
He is also charged with sexually assaulting two other young women. Biela has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Perry acknowledges some of the evidence in the upcoming trial will be "graphic, gruesome," and "inflammatory."
The judge has taken several steps to try to ensure the verdict won't be vulnerable to appeal, holding numerous hearings about the admissibility of evidence and ordering the names of jurors kept secret until after their work is done.
