METAIRIE, La.—Aces starter Barry Enright allowed just one run over seven innings of work, but the offense couldn’t back him up Sunday night, as the New Orleans Zephyrs slid past Reno, 4-0, at Zephyr Field.
Enright (8-4) surrendered an RBI single to New Orleans pitcher Darin Downs in the third, but gave up just one more hit the rest of the night, leaving the game with a 1-0 deficit. The Zephyrs tacked-on three insurance runs in the eighth, while Reno’s offense managed just three hits on the night.
Enright took the hard-luck loss in a 115-pitch effort, surrendering just a run on three hits with six strikeouts over seven frames. Tom Layne allowed a three-run home run in the eighth—his lone inning of work.
Downs (2-1) earned the win, throwing five shutout innings with eight punch outs. Two New Orleans relievers combined to hold the Aces to just a hit over the game’s final four frames.
At the dish for Reno, Ryan Langerhans accounted for two of the Aces’ three hits on the night, and Angel Berroa added a double. Reno was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out 14 times.
The Aces and Zephyrs complete the four-game series on Monday night at Zephyr Field. RHP Kevin Mulvey (3-6, 7.18 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while RHP Elih Villanueva (5-10, 5.70 ERA) gets the nod for New Orleans. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. PT
